Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is a politician and a writer from Mexico who joined politics at the early age of 23 as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party. He served as the Head of Federal District government in 2000-2005. In 2006 and 2012, he became the PRD’s presidential candidate but lost both occasions. Then he formed MORENA in 2014. Currently, he is the newly elected president of Mexico in July 2018.

The early life of AMLO:

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is known as AMLO and was born on November 13, 1953, in Tepetitan, Tabasco, Mexico to the father Andres Lopez who was a trader and mother Manuela Obrador Gonzalez. He is the second child among seven siblings. He has an elder brother named Jose Ramon Lopez Obrador, four younger brothers named Arturo, Pio Lorenzo, Jose Ramiro, Martin and a sister named Candelaria. He did his elementary schooling at Marcos Becerra School, then completed his middle school and high school in the state capital and went to Mexico City at the age of 19 to study at National Autonomous University of Mexica (UNAM). He graduated in political science and public administration from UNAM in 1976 and in the same year he joined Institutional Revolutionary Party and helped Carles Pellicer Camara el Poeta de America’s campaign.

The career of AMLO:

Obrador started his career in 1977 as the director of the Instituto Indigenista in Tabasco and left in 1982. During the tenure, he launched various social programs for the better lifestyle of the Chontal Maya Community in the state. He built 1906 houses and 267 latrines in various places to help the indigenous people. He did lots of hard work for the betterment and better life of the indigenous people. He also built health centers and schools as well as distributed agricultural land among the landless indigenous people so that they would be able to grow crops for self-consumption and cash. He coordinated the election
campaign of Enrique Gonzalez Pedrero successfully, who then became the governor of Tabasco in 1982. Obrador was elected president of state executive committee of Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1983. He went to Mexico City to take his post at the Instituto Nacional del Consumider in 1984.


In 1986, he published his first book, “The first steps, Tabasco, 1810-1867’ and in 1988 the second bool, “Del esplendor a la Sombra : The Restored Republic, Tabasco, 1867-1976”. In 1989, he published another book named “Tabasco Victim of a Fraud” and in 1996 published fourth book, “Between History and Hope: Corruption and Democratic Struggle in Tabasco”.

He was elected for the post of President of PRD and won for the position on August 2, 1996. His tenure was from August 2, 1996, to April 10, 1999. And in 1999 he published his 5th book “Fobaproa: Expediente Abierto: Resena y Archivo”. In 2000, he was elected as the Head of Government of the Federal District, after which he became the country’s most recognizable politician. Obrador was nominated as PRD’s presidential precandidate for the 2006 general election in 2005. He against PRI’s Enrique Pena Nieto and PAN’s Josefina Vazquez Mota in 2012. In 2012 he left the PRD and created “MORENA” ( the National Regeneration Movement) in 2014. He presented “Alternative Project of Nation 2018-2024” in 2017. He published his 15th book “2018 La Salida” in 2017. He is one of the selected candidates for President of Mexico which is to be held on July, 2018. He represented MORENA, PT and socially conservative right-wing social encounter party in the election.

Personal life of AMLO:

Obrador married to Rocio Beltram Medina, a former teacher and a write on April 8, 1979. They together had three sons named Jose Ramon Lopez Beltran, Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran and Gonzalo Alfanso Lopez Beltran. Rocio died in 2003 due to respiratory arrest. Then in 2006, he married Beatriz Gutierrez Muller and they together have one son named Jesus Ernesto Lopez Gutierrez.
