Alex Azar is an American lawyer and is the current Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services since January 24, 2018. He was nominated by President Donald Trump on November 13, 2017. Earlier to that has served as an Associate Independent Counsel in 2001 and confirmed to be the General Counsel of United States Department of HHS. He also served as Vice President of Lilly’s U.S. Managed Health Care Services in 2009 and then President of Lilly USA, LLC in 2012.
The early life of Alex Azar:
Alex Azar’s real name is Alex Michael Azar II who was born on June 17, 1967, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to the mother Lynda and father Alex Azar (same as his name). He completed his high school studies from Parkside High School in Salisbury, Maryland (1981-1985). He completed a B.A. degree in 1988 from Dartmouth College with the highest honors in government and economics. In 1991, he did a J.D. degree from Yale Law School, where he has served as a member of the executive committee of the Yale Law Journal.

As soon as he completed his J.D. degree, he served as a law clerk for Judge J. Michael Luttig of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He worked as a law clerk for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court of the USA between 1992 to 1993. Between 1994 to 1995, he served as an Associate Independent Counsel for Kenneth W. Starr in the United States Office of the Independent Counsel in 1996 and 2001. He has achieved partner status while working for Wiley Rein, a Washington D.C. law firm.
Alex Azar was confirmed to be the General Counsel of the United States Department of Health and Human Services in 2001 (August 3) where he was responsible for the development and approval of all health and human services regulations. He was in charge of the Health and Human Services response to an initiative implemented by George W. Bush to improve government.
He was hired by Eli Lilly and Company Chief executive officer Sidney Taurel to be the company’s top lobbyist and spokesman as its Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications, in 2007. Azar became the Vice President of Lilly’s U.S. Managed Healthcare Services Organization and its Puerto Rico affiliate, in 2009 (April). He became the President of Lilly USA, LLC, the largest division of Eli Lilly and Company, in 2012 (January 1). He also served on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, a pharmaceutical lobby, and resign in 2017 (January). On November 13, 2017, Alex Azar was nominated by President Trump to be the next United States Secretary of Health and Human Services and confirmed on January 24, 2018, and is the 24th person to serve in the position.
