Erin was born on 2nd July 1976 in Mardela Springs to Esther Margaret and Kenneth King Burnett. She is the youngest of the three daughters. Mara and Laurie Burnett are her two elder sisters. Erin was raised as a Catholic but her ethnicity is mixed and is found to be of Scottish and Irish origin.
Burnett did her schooling from St. Andrew’s school in 1994. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics from the Williams College in 1998. Erin was a part of the varsity lacrosse team and often played field hockey.

Following her six-year tenure with CNBC, Burnett decided to leave the network to join CNBC rival CNN. Since 2011, she has been hosting her own show- Erin Burnett OutFront. The show is shot in New York City and has been on the air for more than seven years. She acted in the Tom Cruise starred Edge of Tomorrow, playing the role of a CNN news anchor, a role that mirrored her real-life job.
In 2011, Burnett faced heavy criticism after mocking a group of protestors from the Occupy the Wall Street Movement. Media outlets pointed out her former association with investment banking and deemed her mockery as an act of favoritism. CNN, however, was supportive of Burnett’s ideas and released a press statement that read that Burnett’s show was going to have different views on the story. Burnett had previously faced a backlash in 2009 when she described then Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as a ‘serial killer’ for his plans to spend millions of dollars to launch aerial attacks to cull feral Australian Camels. She later revealed she meant the statement as a joke.
