The actress from the Hollywood movies Mamma Mia! and The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep, took a direct verbal shot at the President-elect Donald Trump at the Golden Globe Awards yesterday night. Meryl Streep slammed Trump while she was giving her acceptance speech for Cecil B. DeMille Award.

She said, “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. So, if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts. And that is not the arts.” As she continued, Streep alluded to what she went through when Trump mocked a disabled reporter. Meryl added that the incident shattered her heart because of the fact that it wasn’t a movie. This kind of act from the leaders set an example for others to do the same, she said.

Streep continued, “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call him on the carpet for every outrage.” Throughout the speech, Streep talked about Trump without even mentioning his name.

Talking about Meryl’s political background, she is a democrat and an absolute Hillary Clinton supporter. Hence, her words were not surprising to everyone.

Who else took a shot at Trump?

The famous comedian Jimmy Fallon was perhaps the first person to have started the rattle in the hall. He opened the program by comparing the new president to Joffrey, the villain King from Game of Thrones. He said, “Game of Thrones is nominated tonight, how great is that? The show has so many plot twists and chalky moments, a lot of people have wondered what it would’ve been like if King Joffrey had lived. Well in 12 days, we’re gonna find out.”

Similarly, another actor Hugh Laurie talked about Trump in his Best Performance Award acceptance speech. Laurie joked that he accepts the award ‘on behalf of psychopathic billionaires everywhere’.

Well, Donald Trump too had a reaction towards Streep’s speech. He took on to Twitter to call her the most overrated actress of her times.
