Anna Georges Eshoo is an American politician who serves as the member of United States House of Representative. She is the representative for the 18th congressional district of the state of California. Eshoo is the only congressperson with an Assyrian heritage.

Anna Eshoo was born on December 13, 1942, in New Britain Connecticut to an immigrant couple. Eshoo’s father, Fred Georges was an Assyrian Christian and worked as a jeweler and watchmaker. Her mother was an Armenian native who fled to the United States. Anna Eshoo is a community college graduate, graduating from California’s Canada College.

The Career of Anna Eshoo

Anna Eshoo was Chair of the San Mateo Democratic Party from 1978 to 1982. Also in the 80s, Anna was a member of the Democratic National Committee. In 1982, Eshoo was elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and even presided over the board in 1986. Eshoo would retire from the board in 1992.

Two years after presiding over the County Board of San Mateo, Eshoo decided to run for Congress in California’s 12th congressional district. Anna won the Democratic primary but was eventually defeated by Republican Tom Campbell, a law professor at Stanford.

In 1992, Tom Campbell decided to give up his congressional seat to run for the Senate. This departure pitted Republican nominee Tom Huening and Anna Eshoo against each other to secure Campbell’s previous seat. Eshoo eventually defeated Huening with a 57-39% vote count. The Republican Revolution of 1994 did not halt Eshoo from keeping her seat which she re-won with 61% of the total vote.

Eshoo’s re-election winning streak would continue in the next century. Anna won re-elections in 2008, 2010, and 2012 defeating Ronny Santana and Dave Chapman to secure her seat at the Congress.

Anna Eshoo has been a firm supporter of gay rights movements. Eshoo supported her opponent Tom Nolan after a gay bashing mailer was directed at him in 1992. Anna has also openly opposed the Marriage Protection Amendment and the Marriage Protection Act citing the bills as “discriminatory” and for “singling out for the first time a minority to prevent their interests from being considered by the highest courts in the land.”

As a representative, Anna Eshoo has introduced the “Kevin’s Law” which if passed would have stopped the production of contaminated meat by granting the Department of Agriculture the right close down the plants practicing the methods. Eshoo has also shown support for her Armenian ancestry by forging the U.S. government to build a stronger relationship with the nation of Armenia. Anna has also supported the Congressional resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Eshoo is also a proponent of Net Neutrality and in collaboration with fellow representative Edward Markey introduced the Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2009 which demanded to make Net Neutrality the law.

Anna Eshoo married George Eshoo with whom she has two children Karen Eshoo and Paul Eshoo. The couple got divorced following ‘irreconcilable differences’. Anna currently resides in Atherton, California. Apart from her college degree, Eshoo has an honorary doctorate degree from Menlo College. She has amassed an estimated net worth of $2 million dollars.
