Kate Brown is the current Governor of Oregon who has been in office since February 18, 2015, as the successor of John Kitzhaber. Formerly, she was Secretary of State of Oregon (2009 – 2015), a member of the Oregon Senate (1997 – 2009) and a member of the Oregon House of Representatives (1991 – 1997).

Early Life and Education

Kate Brown was born on June 21, 1960, to an American family in Spain. Raised in Minnesota, she joined Mounds View High School and successfully graduated in 1978. Leaving Mounds View, Brown entered the University of Colorado at Boulder for an undergraduate degree in environmental conservation. Later, he joined JD at Lewis and Clark College.

Kate Brown is married to Dan Little and the couple has no children together. She is a bisexual woman.

Career

Finishing off with Master’s degree at Lewis and Clark College, Kate Brown entered Oregon politics. In 1991, she became a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, replacing her predecessor Judy Bauman. She served the position until January 12, 1997, and was succeeded by Dan Gardner. Starting on January 13, 1997, Brown joined the Oregon Senate from the 21st District as the successor of Shirley Gold. She consecutively served three terms in the position and left on January 2, 2009.

In the 2008 Oregon Secretary of State Democratic Primary Election, Kate Brown thrashed Rick Metsger, Vicki Walker and Paul Damian Wells with 51.74% votes and a margin of 132,000 votes against second placing Rick Metsger. As the Democratic nominee, Brown went on to face Republican nominee Rick Dancer and Pacific Green nominee Seth Alan Woolley for Secretary of State. Kate won the tight race with 51% votes.

After serving the first terms as Secretary of State, Brown sought for another term and gained the Democratic nomination with an absolute majority of 91.13% votes. Later, she defeated Knute Buehler and Seth Woolley with 51.28% votes. AS Secretary of State, Kate Brown focussed on auditing budget sheets, cracking down on frauds and corruption and using an online voter registration system to increase the number of voters.

Coming to the end of her tenure as Secretary of State, Brown succeeded incumbent Governor John Kitzhaber after his resignation amid a corruption scandal. The assumption led to Oregon Governor Special Election in 2016. Kate Brown won the nomination with 83.06% votes in favor and went on to face Republican Bud Pierce, Independent Cliff Thomason, Libertarian James Foster, and Constitution Aaron Auer. She won the seat of Governor by gaining 51% votes.

Brown reportedly called for a formation of a volunteer group to resist Trump administration. In an email, she said, “Now, more than ever, we must bring communities together to resist in a divided nation.”

Moreover, she even criticized President Trump for not equally treating women governors. She said, “I’ve been there before. I think people forget that there are female governors in the world.” Likewise, in early February, Kate brought out a new executive order to prohibit Oregon executive officials to help federal agents to track illegal immigrants.

In 2015, she signed a bill requiring insurers to pay for a full year of birth control while other lawmakers and Republican Knute Buehler could not do anything except watching. In 2018, she took part as the democratic party in the Oregon Gubernatorial election. After that, both candidate Karte Brown and Knute Buehler discussed on the topic of abortion in the 2018 election. Then, the Incumbent Kate Brown defeated Ed Jones and Candace Neville in the Democratic primary for governor of Oregon. At current (2018), she is the officeholder of Oregon. According to a report, she signed law House Bill 4145 to prohibit convicted stalkers and domestic abuse offenders from buying a gun in the state.
