Amina J. Mohammed is the newly elected Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. She took office on January 1, 2017 alongside Secretary General Antonio Guterres, following the end of Ban Ki Moon and Jan Eliasson’s tenure. Mohammed previously was a Nigerian Minister of Environment.

Personal Life and Education

Amina J. Mohammed was born on 27th June 1961 in Gombe State, Nigeria to an English mother and Nigerian father. Brought up in African society and educated in Kaduna State, Mohammed is 55 years old now.

She is married with six children.

Career

Primarily, Amina rose in Nigerian politics after serving then President of Nigeria as a Senior Special Assistant. While in the office, she worked on the implementation of strategies set to achieve Millennium Development Goals. Likewise, Amina also coordinated the UN yearly debt relief fund of $1 billion, starting in 2005. Prior to receiving that significant job, she was shouldered to coordinate Task Force on Gender and Education for UN.

After serving the UN on various small projects, Amina was directly appointed to work as a Special Advisor to Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon. Her responsibilities were mainly concentrated on Post-2015 Development Planning. More importantly, Amina was successfully able to bring out 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Besides, Amina has also worked as an Adjunct Professor in Development Practice at Columbia University and as an advisor to numerous organizations and boards around the world. For instance, Mohammed was in the Global Development Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and also served as an advocate in the African Women’s Millennium Initiative. Most significantly, Amina J. Mohammed also joined the Independent Expert Advisory Group to formulate newer ideas for revolutionary sustainable development.

Nevertheless, Mohammed is also the founder of Afri-Projects Consortium and an employee at Archon Nigeria. Now, she is a newly appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

While Mohammed’s superior, Secretary General Antonio Guterres, has been critical of Trump’s stances and actions against seven Muslim countries in the Middle East, Amina J. Mohammed hasn’t yet made any significant comments. In regards to the objectives of peace and globalization of the UN, it’s plausible to say that Mohammed is also one of the prominent world leaders standing opposite to Trump. Still, we can’t say for sure until she opens up about President Trump.

Awards

Amina J Mohammed’s fruitful and productive career has been acknowledged with numerous awards. One of those significant awards is the National Honours Award of the Order of the Federal Republic (2006). In 2007, she was commemoratively recruited into Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame.
