David Shulkin is an American Former government official and physician. He was unanimously confirmed to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2017 after serving as an Undersecretary at the agency between 2015 to 2017.

The early life of David Shulkin:

David Shulkin was born on July 22, 1969, at the Fort Sheridan U.S. Army base in Highland Park, Illinois, the United States to the father Mark Weiss Shulkin and mother Sonya Lee (Edelman) Shulkin. The birth name of David Shulkin is David Jonathon Shulkin. Shulkin completed his bachelor’s degree from Hampshire college and did M.D. from Drexel University’s College of Medicine, Pennsylvania. He did an internship at Yale University, School of Medicine and was resident at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Medical Center. He was the Clinical Scholar of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation at the University of Pennsylvania.

The career of David Shulkin:

In medical school, Shulkin worked as a health policy fellow in Washington and served as a staff to the Senate Committee. From 2005 to 2009, he served as the president and CEO at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. From 2010 to 2015, he was the President at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey. He has also worked at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, the Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute and Atlantic Health System Accountable care organization. From 2015-2017, he was the Undersecretary of health for the Department of Veterans Affairs under the former President Barack Obama, he was responsible for the health care of almost 8.8 million veterans and controlled 168 medical centers and 1600 clinics and got $68.6 billion budget. He was the first secretary to lead the VA who is not a veteran.

Although he is not a Veteran, his grandfather served in World War I and was a pharmacist and his father was an Army Captain and a psychiatrist. From February 14, 2017, to March 28, 2018, he served as the 9th Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Trump’s Cabinet and was the member of Trump’s administration also. Shulkin was honored with Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute in Health Economics and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. He was the National Health Policy Fellow, United States, Senate Committee on aging. He was ranked no. 86 in one of the 100 Most Powerful in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare in 2008. In 2016, he was listed among modern health’s 50 most influential physician executives and leaders. He was also honored as one of the country’s top Healthcare leaders for the next century by Modern Healthcare.

David Shulkin is fired or he quit?

On March 29, 2018, President Trump replaced Shulkin by his twitter post and saying he would nominate as a replacement for his personal White House doctor Admiral Ronny Jackson. Though it seems that he was fired but the White House says he quit. Shulkin was dragged into controversies time and again, and this time he was found taking his wife on a business trip to Europe. He is also the second Cabinet secretary to depart over controversies involving expensive travel, following former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s resignation last September.
